matrescence
The process of becoming a mother.
Originally coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael, this term refers to the physiological and emotional journey of becoming a mother, laden with hormonal fluctuation and complexity.
This term speaks to the “work in progress” nature of becoming and being a new mother, where our bodies, relationships and our core identity undergo a massive renovation.
Just like in adolescence, the journey can feel overwhelming. With adequate preparation and support however, the door swings open and she embraces the unknown.
